Why did you contact SA-Recruitment to help secure your position in Australia?

“When I applied, I’ll always remember the subject line: ‘I was Melbourne for this.’ We just had an instant connection. Irene at SA-Recruitment was incredibly supportive throughout the whole process,” she recalls. If you’re a teacher from South Africa wondering how to make the leap to Australia, working with a recruitment agency can help you find the right fit for your career.

Initial thoughts on your new Melbourne school

“From the start, it’s clear that the school systems in Australia are very organized—there’s a policy for everything. People are helpful, and I quickly realized that children are children, no matter where you teach. The basic skills of teaching are universal. If you can teach in South Africa, you can teach here and anywhere.”

Settling into a new life and adapting to a new school

The transition to a new country comes with its fair share of challenges. “The fast pace and intense workload were no joke,” our teacher shares. “It really depends on the school, but everything is new, and that can be overwhelming at first. For example, trying to find your brand of coffee becomes a whole mission! Also, adapting to the number of breaks for kids in the day—there’s a fruit break, recess, and an hour for lunch! I remember thinking, ‘Where do we find time to fit the curriculum in with all these breaks?’”

And driving on the highway can be a cultural shift too. “At first, it felt strange driving at 40 km/h on the highway. But soon enough, I realized everyone is calm and taking it slow, which was quite a contrast to the hectic driving in South Africa.”

How does the cost of living compare to South Africa?

“Living in Australia can be about 1.5 times more expensive than South Africa. Fruits and vegetables are pricey, and eggs can be hard to find. However, salaries are competitive, and teaching is truly valued here. It’s an adjustment, but one that comes with its rewards,” she explains.

How do you feel about safety in Melbourne?

One of the biggest draws to life in Australia is the sense of safety and community. “I’m loving every minute of it. The kids ride their bicycles to school, and we often go for walks by the beach. Public parks feel like living in an estate—clean, safe, and well-maintained. It’s definitely a peaceful place to raise a family.”

The best advice for South African teachers considering the move to Australia

The best advice she can give to teachers thinking about moving? “You were Melbourne for this!” she says with a smile. “Keep trying. Even after 83 ‘We regret to inform you that your application was unsuccessful,’ keep going. The moment you sit here, writing your own feedback letter, you’ll know it was all worth it.”

Recommended apps and resources for new teachers moving to Australia

Relocating to a new country can be overwhelming, but there are apps and resources that can make the process easier. “There’s an app for everything here. Take it one thing at a time and be patient with yourself,” she advises. And if you are lucky enough to be placed at a school that offers the services of a relocation agent like I was - make use of this invaluable service...they can help secure a rental and set up your utilities like lights and water. It’s a huge help in navigating the logistics of moving.”
